6) For women:  Bring loose, breathable long sleeve tops and pants.
7) A rain poncho and small travel umbrella for very wet days on trek – it’s monsoon season!

5) A high SPF and mosturizing lip balm
6) A very high sunscreen – 30 SPF or higher required!

OTHER NEEDED SUPPLIES:

7) Insect Repellent (get one with DEET in it as malaria is a problem in India – the higher the altitude the fewer the mosquitos but mosquitos are found in the Himalayas).
8) A 3 week supply of baby wipes is a must.
9) Face wipes are helpful as well if washing your face after a full day’s hike is not easily done.
10) Purell anti-bacterial hand gel is a definite must for pre-during and post trek travel in India!

8) Most importantly as well – be sure to be in excellent physical condition for the trek. This includes (in my opinion) – doing as much hiking as possible before the trek, getting or staying in good cardiovascular condition and lifting weights.

It is also helpful to remain flexible and practice something like yoga or other stretching exercises to prevent injury.

Experience:

Jawahar Institute Of Mountaineering And Winter Sports

I am Vidit Agarwal, a student of 3rd year, B.E. Electrical, Thapar University, and I can proudly call myself an ALPINIST.
One fine day of October, on my way to mess , I came across a notice of The Adventure Club ( T.U.), and became quite eager to know more about the basic skiing course which the notice talked about. Having already successfully completed a basic Adventure course under NIM, it seemed to be a great opportunity to utilize the 15 days of winter vacations, to learn a sport, and experience the chill and thrill which life brings along.
So , I got myself registered with a nominal subsidized fee of just Rs 4600. The adventure club people were very cooperative in making all the happen, as this was a special batch of 29 students of our college, just started on request of our extremely devoted friends, Shobhit and Brighu.
WE definitely made our university proud by getting 20 alpha grades, 6 beta grades and 3 charlie grades at an institution where no more than 30% of the batch can have alpha, at an institution where civilians are treated no less than an army man, at an institution where teaching is their priority and training their air.

Report at 6:00 p.m. for lecture or face the consequences.
A warm welcome at the Kingsley hotel with hot tea and biscuits followed by admission to the rooms, filling of the forms and finally issuing of the ski kit for the course and then a city tour of gulmarg by our respected instructors marked the starting of our course.
The ski kit included sweat shirt and sweat pants, warm upper and warm lower, a JIM t-shirt, U.V. protection sun glasses, gloves, ski boots, ski and ski poles.
The evening lecture was a brief welcome with an introduction to our institute, trainers and the course.
The rooms were cozy, water was ice cold, air was dry, and there was nothing but snow.
The next morning we wore our ski boots for the first time. Each boot weighed 2 kg minimum and wearing was a difficult task in itself. Then all geared up, we reached the slope, slipping and walking, and then we were introduced to the first technique, Sliding And Gliding. Every day we learned new techniques which are listed as:
 > Herring bone                         > Side step
 > Snow plough                         > Shoosing
 > Snow plough turn                > Stem turn
 > Stem Swing                           > Dynamic stem swing
 > Cristiana                                > Tip and Heel turn
 > Gate attack for Salalam      > Langlouf
There were lectures every alternate day which were as under:
> Introduction to skiing
> Winter Terminology
> Equipment Display
> Basic first aid and winter diseases
> Shelter
> Avalanch
> Avalanch rescue

We were tested in four exams which were:
>Endurance test: An up slope skiing for four kilometers. (Langlouf test)
>Written exam  : Related to practical and theoretical knowledge.
>Salalam test     : A speed and technique combo.
>Technique test : listen to the instructions and change the way of skiing                                 accordingly.
The New Year eve was made memorable by a Ski Movie.
Besides one day we visited the High Altitude Warfare School , a day to be remembered, the dumbstruck view of the army , traing themselves to fight, shoot and survive, on their ski.
Another day we visited Gondola, which was a fine experience.
Snowfall wished us all a Happy New Year and it stopped the night before our departure.
The closing ceremony started with some jokes, them some rescue mission stories by our instructors, and then distribution of JIM&WS batches and two special prizes :
> Best Endurance : Bajwa
> Best Student : Bhupesh
It was a life time experience and I would go for the intermediate course if time permits me.
The leave taking was marked with the emotional pain to leave behind the ski and not by the bruises here and there.

Mountaineering Course 2011

Basic Mountaineering Course 2011

Mountaineering is an art and science and not merely a physical activity. It is one of the finest sports but to practice it without training and technique is deliberate suicide. That being one of the main reasons, The Adventure Club at Thapar University planned a group mountaineering course for the students of Thapar University. The special course was organised by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports,Manali (ABVIMAS) one of the largest Adventure Sports training centre in the country today. adventurehimalayaadventurehimalya.org.org
To organise mountaineering courses, ABVIMAS is the most ideal location for mountaineering training in the Indian Himalayas. Natural rock faces are available adjacent to the Institute complex and the glacier is located at 12,000 feet altitude which is very low from Himalayan standards. The course was scheduled from 14 June till 10th July at the end of which each successful student earned a certificate for clearing the Basic Mountaineering level .The degree is given  by the Government of Himachal Pradesh and is recognized as a benchmark in mountaineering internationally. The course was organized in collaboration with the students of IIT Bombay, which turned out to be one the best things about the course. Because besides the physical benefits of mountaineering, the sport offers other intrinsic benefits--for instance, setting a goal and reaching it. Also, it allows people to work with other people as part of a climbing team, and develop a sense of friendship and team spirit. In all we had a batch of 66 students which consisted of 12 students from Thapar University and rest being from other engineering institutes like IIT-B and Chitkara University.
The duration of the course was of 26 days. This period was divided into different phases as follows

Theoretical, practical Rock Craft training in and around Manali- 10 days
Trekking (approach to the Base Camp at about 12000ft)
with a stopover  at Solangnala for acclimatization                             - 3 days
Field Training ice craft and snow craft near base camp                    - 10 days
Return to Manali                                                                             - 2  days
Administration and Graduation Ceremony                                        - 1 day

Mountaineering is a pursuit that should never be undertaken without a good understanding of the many different aspects involved, ranging from map reading and navigation skills to rope work and understanding mountain weather and were we taught each and every one of them during the span of the course. In the first ten days we were taught all the technique related to rock climbing on actual rock faces near the institute. Physical training for mountaineering requires aerobic conditioning for strenuous climbing. We were made to carry weighted backpacks to train the body to get use to carrying heavy loads, especially for our 12 km trek to base camp which was almost 23 kms away from Manali.

At the end we realized that the whole experience had somewhat stimulated a spirit of adventure in each one of us. We were taught how to take calculated risks, some of us faced our worst fears and some  crossed their limit of endurance. It teaches them to face new challenges and adopt a better outlook towards life by accepting responsibility with courage and confidence.

Achievements
·        Best Team: Thapar University ( Among 8 other teams)
·        Best Team Leader: Parambir Cheema ( Thapar University)
·        6 of 8 Team Leaders from Thapar University
